Last day of the course and last module ever!

Started the day with full of enthusiasm and excitement. As a team, we started to work on our group project.

This is where I would like to highlight about team dynamic.

Bruce Tuckman (1965) developed a 4-stage model of group development.  He labelled the stages, Dr Suess-style:
1. Forming: The group comes together and gets to initially know one other and form as a group.
2. Storming: A chaotic vying for leadership and trialling of group processes
3. Norming: Eventually agreement is reached on how the group operates (norming)
4. Performing: The group practices its craft and becomes effective in meeting its objectives.
Tuckman added a 5th stage 10 years later:
5. Adjourning: The process of "unforming" the group, that is, letting go of the group structure and moving on.

I'm happy to say that my group is able to work efficiently and effectively. = )

As I'm working on the project, I realise that there is no limit to what we can do with New Media. We can use New Media on every stages of learning as presented on my group project.

Hopefully one day, SAF e able to overcome the security issues and make full advantage of the tools available on line. = )

TGIF people!!!

Day 3 of New Media Course

Hello all,

Day 3 comprises of 2 parts - 1) How do people learn? 2) Discussion on how do we move forward with regards to our Final Presentation.

A few points to take note with regards to how people learn, the 4 pillars of learning are as follows:
1) An active dynamic process rather than a passive product of experiences
2) Motivated intrinsically rather than extrinsically
3) Experienced within meaningful, relevant context
4) Building on existing knowledge

I would like to touch on serial no.2 with regards to motivation. SAF has persistently facing motivational issues in the NSF group which in particular the 'men'. Allowance to small, Singapore will never be in a war... all this are the excuses. Till today, there are men who went AWOL because they just can't understand the purpose of national defence. What say you?

Regarding 'How do people learn' - I would like to introduce to you guys, Edgar Dale. In summary, he created 'Cone of learning'. From the cone, you can see that we need to do the real thing to ensure that we will remember more on what was taught to us.

That's all for today. Good night to all.... = )

Day 2 of New Media in Teaching Pedagogy

Olla Peeps... Day 2 started slow and for the entire day, it went by slowly. New websites was introduce -

technorati.com - A website that list down possible blogs or posts that matches your searched keywords.
googledocs - An interface that allows simultaneous editing of a document.
delicious.com - A website that tags and bookmarks website that can be access through the website instead of your PC/Laptops

Steve introduce a YouTube clip titled 'A Vision of Students Today' which as the title mention, gave us some ideas on what the current students have in mind.

Sad to say, my wife could only sum up the clip by saying that she felt nausea after watching it and that was it. This comment was made although i did gave a brief background of the clip before playing it. = (

I did try to ask her whether was there anything else that you capture from the clip and her reply was "nothing else".

There's a glimpse of my life to you....

Good night

Day 1 on New Media in Teaching Pedagogy

The 1st day of every course is always an exciting one to begin with. How is the lecturer and what new things will I be learning this time round. This are the 2 questions that I will ask myself.

An interesting guy named Steve Zuiker was the lecturer for the week. He started off the lesson by having some admin issues such as not printing out the notes for the Course Syllabus which I find a bit orchestrated. No worries, with new Media, it can be resolved without anyone getting out of the room.

New Website was introduced to me.

1) Dropbox.com - which allow all documents to be available online so there is no need to worry if you have forgotten it or lost the files.

2) Commoncraft.com - an ideal website that summaries stuffs. Way cool!

3) bit.ly - a website that allows us to decide the url.

New products was introduced to me.
1) iTunesU

2) Twitter

All the above mention are tools available today that can be use for teaching.

With the availability of the medias on the web, we need to know a few things.
1) Info on the web, is it accurate?

2) Technology allows mass/active participation and interaction which allows, collaborative learning, jigsaw learning etc.

3) Online games as part of a teaching tool is the flavour of the month. As the students participates in the game, it gives one a sense of being in control of ones abilities.

4) Gen Y students seem to display less attention to the educators and show less eye contact. Educators need to know how to manage these students through the New Media.

5) 4 Literacy - 1) Attention 2) Participation 3) Collaboration 4) Critical Consumption 5) Cooperation

That's all for today... Adios!
